The San Francisco Giants took game one of the World Series last night, defeating the Texas Rangers 11-7 at
Pacific Bell Park at SBC Park at AT&T Park. Exciting as it was watching the underdog Giants hang six earned runs on Texas ace Cliff Lee, certain pre-game reporting proved equally riveting.
Case in point, Newy Scruggs – a reporter from NBC Dallas. Prior to the game, Newy pointed out (live on air) that some people off camera were engaging in a little pre-game marijuana consumption.
Said Newy: “This is San Francisco and I can tell you, right over there (he points) there’s some people smoking weed because it’s coming this way. We are truly in San Francisco.”
Newy went on to call out the pot smokers three times in his two-minute segment and was jokingly advised by an NBCDFW anchor to hold his breath.
In a follow up segment, Newy used his brief airtime to literally point out the exact spot where the pot smoking fans had been lighting up. He expressed concerned that the contact high was going to get him “all wired up ready to go” and then commented that the “police aren’t even doing anything!”
Despite playing up the stereotype that all San Franciscans are laidback, lackadaisical potheads, it was a good-natured report – Mr. Scruggs repeatedly referred to Giants fans as “nice people.”
