Although it's against Colorado law for bars and nightclubs to serve marijuana to patrons, one local brewery has discovered a loophole in the system and is now selling Recreational Smoke to its customers… in the form of a beer.
This past Saturday, at exactly 4:20pm, Boulder-based West Flander’s Brewing Co. began selling their alcoholic homage to Colorado’s newly legalized marijuana trade -- a sudsy beverage the company calls Recreational Smoke.
According to their website, Recreational Smoke is “a homegrown, fully legal, American-style porter…enhanced with heady beechwood-smoked malts from Bamburg, Germany. These specialty grains are paired with an array of other roasted malts to create a unique beer with notes of baked brownies and toasted grains, with satisfying smoked flavors throughout. All rolled up in a beer with a mellow 6% ABV.”
Head brewer Brian Lutz says that ever since the brewery opened its doors last year, customers have been making remarks about how nice it would be to enjoy Recreational Smoke in their brewpub. “In light of recent events, we decided the time was right for us to make that happen,” he said.
Unlike the hefty rates Colorado residents are being forced to shell out to get their hands on recreational marijuana, Lutz says that West Flander’s customers can enjoy Recreational Smoke for just 30 cents per ounce, 16 ounces at a time.
However, the brewery sarcastically cautions tourists, saying that while out-of-state visitors are legally permitted to purchase West Flander’s Recreational Smoke, there are still a few places where holding it may cause a hassle. “If you’re traveling here by plane to enjoy it, be aware that Recreational Smoke is not permitted on the property at Denver International Airport. Possession of it there can get you into serious trouble,” says West Flanders co-founder Mark Heinritz.
“We also want to remind our Recreational Smoke customers,” said Heinritz, “that it’s still illegal to consume Recreational Smoke in public here in Boulder or anywhere else in Colorado.”
