In a promising move, the New York state legislature on May 29th voted to decriminalize public possession of small amounts of pot. Governor Andrew Cuomo supports the measure, which would make public marijuana possession a violation of current laws (similar to having a can of open beer in your possession), rather than a misdemeanor. Democrats say having marijuana would still be illegal, but should not be treated as a crime.
Not surprisingly, Republicans are balking at the measure. Senator Martin Golden (R-Brooklyn) stated “We should not be sending a signal across the state that marijuana is okay.”
