A Bangladeshi man has been sentenced to four years in prison for possessing 1.4 grams of pot – less than half of an eighth – in the United Arab Emirates city of Dubai. The man, identified only as K.A., was found guilty despite testing negative for any drug use and steadfastly maintaining his innocence.
The Dubai Court of First Instance found the 26-year-old, who was working as a dyer, guilty of possessing “two packets of a grassy substance hidden in [a] newspaper.” An anti-narcotics cop testified that an informant advised him that K.A. had drugs at his residence in the district of Satwa.
On April 21, the narcs planned a raid of K.A.’s home. However, they spotted him in front of his apartment and immediately searched his person. That’s when they allegedly found the pot “in between the folds of the newspaper” he was holding.
The Dubai forensic lab verified that K.A. tested negative for any drug use. Nonetheless, he was found guilty and sentenced to four years in jail. K.A. will be deported back to Bangladesh after completing his sentence.
