I am a student at Ohio State University in Columbus. Being an avid smoker, I have always envied the students at The University of Michigan for Ann Arbor's lax marijuana enforcement. Previously I could only dream of cops acting so progressively around my campus. However, all that changed a few weeks ago.
It was Greek Week and my friend's apartment was listed as a "campus crawl" spot where people would stop in for a shot and mingle. We decided after the time was up, we were going to celebrate the success of the party with a bowl. Unfortunatley his roomate's girlfriend was coming over later that night, and she is anti-marijuana. We were forced to smoke it out on his balcony/stairwell.
After the final group had left, we went out on the balcony (he lives on a third floor apartment complex) and lit up a small glass pipe and started to pass it around. In our harmless euphoric state, we must have missed hearing someone coming up the steps. After the bowl was passed to me, right before I took another hit, I looked up to see a Columbus Police Officer staring at the three of us. At this point, there is nothing any of us could have done except cooperate and hope for the best. The conversation went as follows:
Officer: "You guys realize you are doing something wrong"
Me: "Yes, we do"
Officer: "Guys. I was called up here on a noise complaint and I have to catch you doing this?"
Pause and silence
Officer: "Please. Just turn the music down, and get rid of that (pointing towards the pipe)."
Me: "So, do you want me to just pitch it over the edge, do you want to take it?"
Officer: "Ya know, I don't really care, just take it inside so I can't see it, crack a window and please, keep the music down so I don't have to see you three again."
Group: "We will. Thank you so much."
After this, we went inside, shut the door and fell to the ground half laughing and half scared to death. I immediatley called my brother to tell him--he has been known to dabble in the ganja--and he said, well that teaches you two things: "One, always smoke pot inside, and two, that somewhere, there are real supertroopers out there."
I felt this story was perfect for Busted Letters because it would remind the readers that even though the vast majority of law enforcement officers would never act like this, there are some.
