In the spring of 2000 it was well known that the police in my town had started to target ravers. But as I was filling up with gas at 9:00 on a friday night, I had no idea what was about to happen. When I went inside to pay for the gas, a cop who'd been watching me from the parking lot across the street rolled up. There were two cop cars there by the time I had payed and discovered what was going on. They had unlocked my car through an open back window and were searching it. Inside was a half-ounce of premium chronic and my beautiful, hand-blown, glass bubbler (and that pipe had memories! the bastards.), plus a scale -- it was all in the center console, and they found it. I was charged with possession with intent to distribute. Even after I had spoken to a lawyer and assured them that I didn't want to make any statements, the cops still tried to question me 3 times before releasing me on promise to appear. When I got to court the police brief read like a fantasy. The cops stated that they pulled me over and the car was full of smoke, then they searched me with my consent and found the drugs. My lawyer assured me that the key would be judge selection and a guilty plea. He assured me that they wouldn't send a college student to jail or even give me a record. I was given an absolute discharge thankfully.
I wish that was where this story ended. Because not 1 month later I was pulled over again. And the cop asked me how the hell I got off on my other court case, and the name of my lawyer (he snorted in disgust when I told him.) He searched me once, then another cop arrived. Then they searched me again. Somehow some cocaine magically appeared in my wallet (I don't do cocaine). I was given a 1-year conditional discharge. So far I haven't experienced a search that didn't flagrantly violate section 8 of the penal code, and have spent $8000 on my defense. Each case took a year to resolve. I haven't done a thing in my life to hurt anyone else. Thank you very much for giving me the chance to share this.
