The Houston Texans released three players Monday for violating team rules. Sam Montgomery, Willie Jefferson and Cierre Wood were apparently caught smoking pot in the team’s hotel prior to the Texan’s road game against Kansas City.

Jefferson’s agent, Chad Cannon, insists the players were merely smoking a cigar and that marijuana use was not the reason for his client’s release. “We’re discussing the possibility of filing a grievance,” Cannon told reporters.

Montgomery also claims the incident only involved a cigar. The third-round draft pick out of LSU says he walked into a hotel room to find the other two players smoking tobacco.

However, for some reason, Montgomery also admits “I made a childish mistake.”

So what was the mistake? Walking into a hotel room? Witnessing two grown men smoking a cigar? Participating in smoking a cigar? It’s all a bit hazy at the moment and Texans head coach Gary Kubiak offered little clarity.

“I won’t discuss team rules and those type of things … I've got five months of work invested in those three young men and made a decision today to move forward,” Kubiak said at a news conference.

So how does this impact your fantasy football team? Well, not at all. But the Texans, who have been hit hard with injuries over the past several weeks, could have used the depth provided by undrafted rookie running back Wood and undrafted rookie linebacker Jefferson – although both have received limited playing time this season.

While public support for marijuana has never been higher, the sports world remains untouched by such support as well as recent legalization and decriminalization efforts.
