Grow Q&A: Grow Light Spectrums

Dear Dan, Should I change my light spectrum during the vegetative state? If so, what would you recommend? – Sean T.

Dear ST,
With High Intensity Discharge (HID) lighting, most people recommend Metal Halide (MH) lighting during the vegetative stage and High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) for flowering. However, don’t let this discourage you from growing if you only have one light with which to grow. I’ve seen great harvests pulled off by people using Halides throughout vegetative and flowering growth and vice versa with the Sodiums.

The most important thing is to provide enough light. Once you’ve got a few indoor seasons under your belt, you can begin to explore the options of using separate spectrums and even mixing them for more optimum growth. In the meantime, focus on providing enough lumens throughout all growth stages to produce fat sticky buds. Good Luck!
