Some Republican lawmakers want to make billions of dollars in reductions to the food stamp program, commonly referred to as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, because they say money intended for recipients to buy food is actually going towards the purchase of medical marijuana.
Earlier last week Representative Virginia Fox said that she sides with a proposal to cut food stamp benefits by $40 billion because she fears that many individuals, currently enrolled in the federally funded nutritional plan, are scamming the hand that feeds them and in turn, utilizing Uncle Sam’s greenbacks to reap some green benefits of their own.
“The Nutrition Reform & Work Opportunity Act is designed to preserve the integrity of the SNAP program for families, and especially children, who rely on food stamps,” she said. “Reforms in this legislation put stronger protections in place to ensure that SNAP money is reserved only for those who qualify for food stamps and isn’t wasted on government public relations campaigns, medical marijuana purchases, or lottery winners. Questionable loopholes and recruitment activities which extend assistance to those who make too much money are also ended.”
On Friday, the House of Representatives approved legislation, which some believe will unjustly serve to disqualify nearly four million lower-income families from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program in 2014. Recent projections indicate that these deductions to the food stamp program will jettison some three million people from the popular nutritional plan over the course of the next ten years.
Federal law mandates that food stamp recipients not be allowed to omit the cost of medical marijuana from their reported income. “A household may not utilize the SNAP medical deduction for the cost of any substance considered illegal under Federal law,” according to a memorandum published in 2012 by the USDA’s Food and Nutrition Service.
At least not until the federal government makes the decision to finally legalize cannabis. Then, perhaps this country will bare witness to the advent of the Socialist Supplements for Stoners… or Weed Stamps.
