George Soros, the billionaire philanthropist known for his generous donations to drug policy reform – he’s given roughly $75 million to the cause since 1995 – reportedly has donated $1 million toward California’s Proposition 19.

The Drug Policy Alliance’s Ethan Nadelmann, who has been on the receiving end of some of Soros’ largesse, said this is the first time Soros has supported “outright legalization.” Previously Soros mainly concentrated on issues involving medical cannabis and treatment in place of incarceration.

Soros recently expressed his views on Prop 19 in a Wall Street Journal op-ed piece:

"Regulating and taxing marijuana would simultaneously save taxpayers billions of dollars in enforcement and incarceration costs, while providing many billions of dollars in revenue annually."

Additionally, Soros supports legalization for its potential to reduce violent crime and racial inequities.
