Baked Science: Red Velvet Truffles

Welcome to Baked Science, a new series of cannabis-infused edible reviews featuring test results from SC Labs.

Elegantly presented and beautifully executed, these Red Velvet Cake Truffles from The Nutty Baker are moist, delicious balls of dense cake covered with a layer of cream cheese frosting. Perfect for cheering up an ill friend, these truffles are “providing comfort to people in need,” packing about 33 milligrams of THC into each bite-sized cake ball. Three truffles arrive in each little box, for a total package containing about 100 mg of THC.

Dosing with one truffle sent me into a world of relaxing reverie, while two truffles would provide a more satisfying dose for those with high tolerances. No dosage advice is given on the label, so it would be helpful to add a sentence saying, “Start with no more than one truffle and wait two hours before consuming any more cannabis food.”

Lab test results confirmed that the truffles contain only slightly less than the anticipated 33 mg of THC. The total package contained 83.9 milligrams of THC, so about 27.96 mg per truffle. The ratio of THCa to THC was about 1:1, meaning there was more potential THC available that wasn’t activated. Levels of THCa were at 80.15 mg for the entire package, so about 26.7 mg per truffle. Negligible amounts of CBD and CBN were also found.

Overall, this is a fantastic product that looks and tastes great while delivering almost all the THC promised. The producer could alter their infusion process to activate more THC, but many medical patients actually enjoy the healing benefits of THCa without the added psychoactive property. Adding a line to the label saying, “Truffles may contain 25 to 35 milligrams of THC each” would help patients more accurately judge the effects.

High Times is proud to work with SC Labs to create a new series of cannabis concentrate and edibles reviews written by Elise McDonough, author of The Official High Times Cannabis Cookbook and Marijuana for Everybody! Featuring lab-tested results will allow us to inform and educate consumers of cannabis-infused products as to their potency, efficacy, safety and value. We look forward to providing this valuable service together for the millions of readers of hightimes.com. You can follow SC Labs on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, and look for #BakedScience posts!
